As RamblinRover makes reference to the 'SS' stands for Swallow Sidecar Company however they changed their name as any reference to 'SS' automatically brought to mind the German SS and so Jaguar was born. The rest as they say is history.
Several other institutions also changed there name due to German naming and anti-German sentiment during the two world wars.
